4 Easy Ways to Repair the Leaky Roof

Here are the easy ways to repair a leaky roof that will repair your intensely.

  1. Locate The Roof Leak

When you notice water stains on your ceiling, you may have a leaking roof. Notate the leak’s location, then go outside with binoculars to find the leak. Make sure there are no curled, cracked, or missing shingles. Where shingles meet or where caulking and flashing have been compromised, leaks can occur. In addition, end caps, the angular shingles that cover roof peaks may also be the source of leaks.

  1. Securing Curled Shingles

Roofing shingles that are curling back can be re-secured with a coat of asphalt roofing cement or by using a caulking gun with a caulking gun equivalent (such as Henry Rubberized Wet Patch, available at The Home Depot in 10.1-ounce cartridges). You should apply a generous amount of roofing cement to the underside of the shingle when repairing a leaky roof to ensure that the edge and corners are secured. Press this firmly into place to set it.

  1. Replace Missing or Damaged Shingles

You may be able to repair a leaky roof by replacing cracked, missing, or rotten shingles (if you have the replacement shingles). Remove damaged shingles by lifting the edges of neighbouring shingles and carefully remove nails with a pry bar. Remove any cement residue from the roof and level or remove protruding nails. When the pins are removed, the shingle should slide off.

Round the back corners of the new shingle with a utility knife before installing it. This will make it easier for you to align the shingle with those on either side and slide it under the one above. When it is in place, lift the corners of the overlapping shingles, and secure the top of the new replacement with 6-inch galvanized roofing nails (such as these from The Home Depot).

  1. Fix the Flashing

You can fix leaks caused by metal flashing around chimneys and dormers by simply resealing joints with a caulk gun filled with roofing cement. Apply a fresh new coat of roof cement with a putty knife to joints that were previously sealed with roof cement.

You may wish to have a professional roofer inspect your roof if shingles are lifting too quickly or if an entire row of shingles needs replacing. Repairing spots on a roof that needs replacement will not prolong its life.

Check your home’s gutters regularly. Make sure that your gutters are not blocked or damaged. If you notice any damage to the gutter, you need to repair it immediately before it leads to water damage in the interior of your home.
